Abstract

Several groups of early vertebrates had in the dermis a pore-canal system that was probably a primitive sensory system functioning to detect water displacements. The lateral-line sensory system, and possibly the inner ears, are believed to have been derived from the pore-canal system. © 1966 by the American Society of Zoologist.
