Abstract

Machine learning (ML) is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) concerned with the automatic acquisition of knowledge in computer systems. It has been assuming steadily growing importance in recent years due on the one hand to the need to solve AI-specific problems in formalizing the knowledge of experts and its coherent integration into knowledge-based systems and on the other to find effective solutions to problems associated with the processing of nonsymbolic data such as speech or image data. Highly promising approaches to solutions for both classes of application are currently under discussion. The paper gives an overview of AI-based machine learning techniques and other approaches that are concerned more with the representation of cognitive capabilities.
