Bacteria utilizing fucoidan as the sole carbon source were isolated from sea sand. Sixty-six isolates were obtained from 374 sea sand samples. Five grew comparatively well in a medium of fucoidan-artificial sea water. These bacteria utilized various fucoidan substrates. The production of fucoidan sulfatase was estimated by the increase in liberation of sulfate into the culture medium. The liberation was roughly parallel to the increase in turbidity due to cell growth. © 1984, Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry. All rights reserved.
