Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyse the way in which students make curriculum choices in secondary education and to evaluate its impact on motivation and academic achievement. 320 secondary school students participated in this study. They were enrolled in four different educational pathways: science, economics, arts, and management. Results reveal a significant relationship between academic achievement and academic pathway decisions. Students make choices mainly based on academic (inability, rather than on personal and vocational interest. Curriculum choices were positively associated to motivation and academic achievement.
