Abstract

We introduce a generalization of the algebraic notion of a regular sequence, which we call a relative regular sequence, and prove some structural properties of this concept. Applications of this concept arise in algebraic topology, where they help clarify the structure of generalized cohomology rings of infinite real Grassmannians.
