Abstract

This entry provides an overview of feminist theoretical work in communication, with emphasis on media studies and rhetoric. After an introduction focusing on the historical development of these theories and their emphases, the work is divided into three main sections: gendered content and dominant ideology, objectification and the male gaze, and the third wave and postfeminism. Each section describes the major insights, concepts, and streams of scholarship within the subtopic. Suggestions for future research are included.
