cf. C.A. 48, 2598g. The seeds and fresh parts of a no. of Brassicae were examined for their content of volatile isothiocyanates (RNCS) (I) by paper chromatography (C.A. 47, 7376g). The Brassica studied, % fat, and R found were: B. nigra, 32, allyl; B, juncea, 37, allyl; B. pseudojuncea, 34, allyl and 3-butenyl; B. oleracea, 35, allyl and 3-butenyl; B. oler. capitata (II) var. alba, 37, allyl and sec-butyl(?); II var. rubra, 32, allyl and benzyl(?); B. oler. (III) percrispa, 41, allyl; III botrytis, 34, allyl and sec-butyl; III gemmifera, 35, allyl and sec-butyl; III sabauda, 35, allyl and sec-butyl (trace); III asparagoides, 42, Me(?), benzyl, and unidentified; B. napus (rapifera) esculenta, 40, -; B. rapa rapifera, 42, unidentified; and B. rapa (rapifera) communis, 45, 3-butenyl and 2 unidentified compounds with RPh 1.03 and 1.33.
