Abstract

Theological thought of the Archipelago (Nusantara) Ulama’s still need to be studied. As long as this is known that the developed theology in Nusantara is only Ash‘arism, while Māturīdīsm is less well known. In Nusantara, the existence of Māturīdīsm was under domination of Ash‘arism. This study aims to construct theological paradigm in Nusantara. And focus of this study is to identify and describe the intellectual treasures of theological manuscript Durr al-Farā’id by Nūr al-Dīn al-Rānīrī. Using the ‘historical criticism’ approach and the analysis of ‘theological comparison’, it was concluded that al-Rānīrī was the first Ulama to introduce the discourse of Ash‘arism-Māturīdism simultaneously to the Nusantara’s people. This study concludes that theological discourse in Nusantara is a form of continuity of global theological discourse that developed in the Islamic world. In this context, the discourse of Ash‘arism-Māturīdism is an integral unity in the Sunnī theological tradition that emphasizes the elements of moderation and balance in theology.
