Abstract

The notion of min-wise independent families of permutations was examined. This study was motivated by the fact that such a family is essential to the algorithm used in practice by the Alta Vista web index software to detect and filter near-duplicate documents. In the course of the study, interesting and challenging theoretical questions related to this concept were found.
