Liens transnationaux et participation internationale des jeunes d’origine immigrée en région au Québec

Abstract

Le concept de participation doit être redéfini lorsqu’il est appliqué aux jeunes contemporains — immigrés ou pas —et encore plus aux jeunes vivant dans des espaces faiblement urbanisés, telles les régions du Québec éloignées de la métropole montréalaise ou de la capitale québécoise. Après quelques considérations théoriques sur le concept de participationdes jeunes immigrés et sa signification particulière en contexte régional, des éléments de réflexion sont apportés à partir de l’analyse des données d’une recherche réalisée en1998 sur la participation globale des jeunes régionaux d’origine immigrée au Québec âgés de 18 à 29 ans. Une attention particulière est accordée à la participation internationale de ces jeunes (stages de travail humanitaire à l’étranger, projets d’entraide internationale, activités au sein d’organismes mondiaux…) et aux liens transnationaux qu’ils tissent au cours des étapes de leur vie (enfance, étudessecondaires et post-secondaires, premier emploi…). Le sens de cet engagement international est discuté.The notion of participation needs redefinition when it is applied to today’s youth—whether immigrants or not—and even more to young people living in the regions outside the large urban centres of Montreal and Quebec City. The article begins with some theoretical considerations of the concept of participation by young immigrants, and its meaning in the regional context. It then moves to an analysis of data collected in 1998 about the general participation of young immigrants aged 18 to 29 and living in the regions. Particular attention was paid to the international participation of these young people (internships for humanitarian work abroad, international aid programs, or activities in global institutions) and the transnational ties they developed throughout their childhood, secondary and post-secondary education, and employment. Lastly, the meaning of this international involvement is considered.
