Abstract
It has been alleged that the standard scholastic interpretation of Aristotle's notion of prime matter is incoherent. Prescinding for the most part from the historical-exegetical question of what view(s) Aristotle himself actually held, this paper endeavors to refute the serious charge of inconsistency by undertaking a thorough exploration of Thomas Aquinas's position.
