Abstract
Lay SummaryBotulinum toxin (BXT) is a popular product used in a variety of medical and aesthetic interventions. Its mechanism of action relies on temporarily paralysing the muscles in the target area as well as influencing the activity of a variety of cell types. We undertook this study to ascertain whether BXT is a helpful agent for the management for keloid scars. We conclude that there is some supporting evidence that BXT can be as helpful as steroids in improving the troublesome characteristics of keloid scars including bulk and redness. Additionally, it appears to have a notably beneficial effect in alleviating the problematic symptoms of pain and itch. The evidence behind the role of BXT for the management of keloids after surgical removal is very limited at present.
