Abstract

The economic, political, and social issues related to urban transportation and mobility, at the await for the next elected mayor of São Paulo city, are not few and will require boldness to innovate. It will not be possible for him to avoid the mobility transition on his agenda, which will require him to embrace fairer and more sustainable forms of urban mobility, as well as to be willing to tackle inter-federative governance and democratic management arrangements. For this purpose, it will be necessary to undertake an alternative approach to traditional transportation planning, also to search for unorthodox solutions, in which the process of appropriation of mobility by the community leads to a shift into the present rationale and understanding and more democratic governance and management practices, reinstating the leading role of public management in favour of the transition to just and sustainable mobility.
