Social representations of undergraduates about teacher identity and work

Abstract

This study discusses data collected from undergraduates in pedagogy and teacher training degree programmes on their representations of teacher identity and work. The study is part of a project being developed by the International Centre of Studies on Social Representations and Subjectivity – Education (CIERS-ed), whose objective is to identify how these students define their future practice through analysis of their social representations of teaching work. The study is based on the theory of social representations proposed by Serge Moscovici (2003). Two methods of data collection were used: the «formation of groups» task and the «directed word classification» task. The results indicate that male and female students share some representations about teaching. There were also indications of differences according to students’ gender and type of course.Este estudo discute dados coletados de estudantes de graduação em pedagogia e licenciaturas de formação de professores sobre as suas representações de identidade e trabalho docente. O estudo é parte de um projeto que tem vindo a ser desenvolvido pelo Centro Internacional de Estudo em Representações Sociais e Subjetividade – Educação (CIERS-ed), cujo objetivo é identificar como é que os estudantes da área da educação definem a sua futura prática através da análise das suas representações sociais do trabalho docente. O estudo baseia-se na teoria das representações sociais proposta por Serge Moscovici (2003). Foram utilizados dois métodos de recolha de dados: a formação de grupos de palavras e o teste de classificação dirigida. Os resultados indicam que os estudantes do sexo masculino e feminino partilham algumas representações sobre ser professor. Também houve indicações de diferenças de acordo com o género e tipo de cursos.
