Abstract
Varieties of carbon fiber are described, with emphasis on the extensive range of their engineering properties. The manufacture of carbon fibers is briefly outlined. Interrelationships among various properties are shown with reference to the anisotropy of graphite. The engineer needs to be aware of the basic nature of carbon fibers, more than of specific details of data, because the range of properties is continually and rapidly being expanded by worldwide research and development. The discussion is introductory; a bibliography is provided for those seeking more information.
