Abstract
The expected clinical results of the treatment with autologous conditioned serum (ACS) used on horses with osteoarthritis (OA) are based mainly on studies from the field of human medicine. These studies documented an effect lasting up to two years after therapy. The aim of the underlying study was to investigate the long-term outcome of horses with OA of the coffin joint that are exclusively treated with ACS. For this purpose, the medical records of horses whose coffin joint was treated with ACS between January 2007 and June 2010 were analysed. X-ray and MRI scans were re-evaluated. The coffin joint was only diagnosed with osteoarthritis if the coffin joint anesthesia reduced lameness by at least 50% or if the block anesthesia delimited the lameness to the hoof area and the OA was clearly confirmed through diagnostic imaging. The long-term outcome was determined through telephone interviews with the owners. After a period of at least two years following the ACS treatment of the coffin joint, eight out of 26 horses (31%) returned to work at a level equal to or greater than their previous performance level and four (15%) returned to work at a lower level. In the case of 14 horses (54%), no long-term treatment success could be observed. No significant correlation between the severity level of the OA and the therapy results could be proven.
