The creation of spin-off can be used by universities to commercialize their research results. By means of this instrument, the university can contribute to the development of the local economy and to increase its revenues. However, due to the relatively recent character of the phenomenon of the University spin-offs, the empirical studies are not plentiful on the topic. The objective of this paper is to understand why some Spanish universities are more successful than others at generating spin-offs. We find that University spin-offs are significantly positively associated with financial and human resources allocated to the research. On the contrary, the number of publications per PhD academic has a negative impact on spin-off formation.
