Abstract

The aldolase isozyme patterns of human brain and brain tumors were investigated using cellulose acetate membrane electrophoresis. Normal human brain contained aldolase C, generally detected in mammalian brain and nerve tissues, aldolase A, the muscle type aldolase, and their 3 hybrid molecules. Gliomas, thought to originate in the medullary epithelium, had the same aldolase isozyme pattern as normal brain. Aldolase C was not detected, while aldolase A was dominant in meningiomas of mesenchymal origin. Hemangiomas had the same isozyme pattern as normal brain and gliomas. The aldolase isozymes of other brain tumors were also investigated, and the relation of the origins of tumors to the occurrence of aldolase C is discussed. Studies on aldolase isozymes are useful in diagnosis of tumors. Copyright © 1971 American Cancer Society
