Abstract

The characters of Hippothoa Lamouroux are briefly discussed. Descriptions are givenof H. divaricata Lamouroux (type species of Hippothoa), H. flagellum Manzoni, H.trigemma sp.n., H.gigerium sp.n., H.delta sp.n., H.tongimasp.n., H.hyalina (L.), and H.bathamae sp.n.Attention is drawn to important diagnostic characters hitherto overlooked or largely ignored, including the orifice, the form and disposition of the pore-chambers (which influencebranching pattern), zooeciules, the ancestrula, early astogeny, and the presence or absenceof a gizzard. All the species except H.gigerium occur in New Zealand, while that species, H.divaricata, H.flagellum and H.hyalina are present around the British Isles. Notes on biology are given where possible, and the status of described varieties and related species is considered. © 1977 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
