Abstract

Toxoplasmosis is caused by the protozoon Toxoplasma gondii, in whose lifecycle cats and catlike animals are central hosts. For the acquired infection, which is mostly benignant, no therapy is required in most cases. The prognosis of a congenital infection is poor, partly because of the difficult diagnosis. Primary prevention (health education), possibly combined with secondary prevention (detection of seroconversion) is effective. Toxoplasmosis is a common protozoan infection in AIDS patients. Furthermore, toxoplasmosis occurs in other immunocompromised patients.
