Abstract
Laser induced phosphor thermometry as a reliable technique requires an analysis of factors controlling or contributing to the precision and accuracy of a measurement. In this paper, we discuss several critical design parameters in the development of luminescence lifetime-based phosphor thermometry instrumentation for use at elevated temperatures such as encountered in hot sections of gas turbine engines. As precision is predominantly governed by signal and background photon shot noise and detector noise, a brief summary is presented of how these noise contributions may affect the measurement. Accuracy, on the other hand, is governed by a range of effects including, but not limited to, detector response characteristics, laser-induced effects, the photo-physics of the sensor materials, and also the method of data reduction. The various possible outcomes of measurement precision and accuracy are discussed with luminescence lifetime measurements on Eu(III):YSZ sensor coatings. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
