Abstract

This review examines the potential importance of mechanisms other than the release of oxytocin for efficient milk removal. First, evidence is presented that oxytocin release is not always essential for efficient milk removal. Second, potential roles for the release of oxytocin during suckling or milking not directly related to milk removal are discussed. Third, alternative mechanisms that potentiate or induce milk ejection are introduced. Finally, the role of the autonomic nervous system in the milk removal process is examined. © 1983, American Dairy Science Association. All rights reserved.
