Abstract

The Pacific Northwest Coast is the 21st book in the “Living With the Shore” series published by Duke University Press. This series was initiated by the series′ editors, Orrin Pilkey and William Neal, who have worked over 15 years to develop a series of books covering each coastal state and the hazards of oceanfront development. The shoreline nationwide is caught between the rising waves of humanity from the rear and rising sea level, hurricanes, El Niño events, and tsunamis from the front. Coastal populations nationwide continue to increase, and present data indicate half of the nation's people now live in coastal counties.
