Abstract
Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs) are a key component of India’s three-stage nuclear program, with sodium selected as the coolant. The development, operation, and expansion of India’s FBRs demand a skilled workforce, especially among younger professionals, to address the challenges in designing, operating, and decommissioning sodium systems. Since 2011, the Indian sodium school at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) has focused on cultivating specialized expertise through a comprehensive training program in sodium science and technology. The curriculum encompasses the design, operation, safety, and decommissioning of sodium systems used in Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors, and combines lectures, hands-on practical exercises, and site visits to sodium facilities. The school emphasizes real-world applications, with experimental setups for sodium fire suppression, sodium-water reactions, and sodium spray behaviour. Progress is monitored through periodic assessments, and certificates are awarded upon completion, with top performers recognized for their achievements. To date, more than 246 trainees have completed the program, contributing significantly to the development of India’s sodium technology expertise. This training initiative plays a crucial role in supporting India’s current and future SFR projects, preparing a skilled workforce to tackle the complex challenges of sodium technology, while also contributing to the global advancement of sustainable nuclear energy.
