Abstract

The pulp and paper industries generate waste-water with high polluting potential especially for the organic load and color, which are not efficiently removed in conventional biological treatments. The present work used at post-treatment of effluent from a pulp and paper industry using ultrafiltration and microfiltration membranes filters coupled with the advanced oxidative process named Photo Fenton. Treatability tests of effluent from a pulp and paper industry at a pilot plant of microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were made followed by the advanced oxidation process (AOP) Photo Fenton. The removal of turbidity, COD and color were determined. It was found that the UF removal efficiency was better for color and COD; the two treatments used to remove turbidity were similar, reaching over 99% efficiency. Both the MF as UF gave very promising results for the removal of the studied parameters. The PhotoFenton process proved to be a good alternative to the complementary treatment of MF and UF permeate; reaching the treatment of MF + POA with a removal of 99.04%, 95.97% and 96.43% for turbidity; COD and true color respectively; and 99.90%, 82.58% and 99.49% for UF + POA.
