Abstract
the aim of this study was to determine: i) the validity of the factorial structure of the portuguese version of the satisfaction With life scale (sWlsp) with adults, using a Confirmatory Factor analysis (CFa); and ii) the scale invariance across sexes. the sample was composed by 870 adults (565 females and 305 males), with ages comprised between 18 to 75 years old (average of 36.29 13.35 years). the alpha reliability was α=0.82 and the values of the inter-item and the item-total correlations vary from 0.40-0.63 and 0.54-0.70, respectively. the CFa results (c 2 =21.13, p<0.001; c 2 / gl=4.23; CFi=0.99; tli=0.99; rmsea=0.06; srmr=0.02) revealed the structural validity of sWlsp when used with adults. moreover, the CFa results (CFi>0.95; tli>0.95; srmr≤0.05; rm-sea≤0.08) of 3 models hierarchically more restricted (number of factors, items' saturation and variance-errors) supported the hypothesis of the scale invariance across sexes. therefore, this study provides empirical evidence to the assumption that sWlsp is a valid instrument to assess the way adults of both sexes evaluate their lives in global terms. hence, we recommend its use by all researchers interested in this domain.
