Pelo centro, contra a esquerda: evangélicos, economia e política nos debates da Constituinte (1987-1988)

Abstract

Resumo: Este artigo analisa os posicionamentos políticos e econômicos de deputados evangélicos no contexto da Assembleia Constituinte (1987-1988). Especialmente a partir das manifestações dos deputados Daso Coimbra e Fausto Rocha, evidenciamos a presença de uma retórica de matriz economicamente liberal, voltada à defesa da livre iniciativa e do empreendedorismo, em reação a um polo opositor, identificado com grupos associados ao progressismo e aos partidos mais localizados à esquerda do espectro político - polo este visto como defensor de perspectivas “estatizantes” para a vida econômica e social do país. Seus discursos se notabilizam por uma contundente crítica anticomunista, antiestatal, e pela associação entre liberdade de empreendimento e livre expressão e iniciativa religiosa. Por fim, o artigo mostra como esses parlamentares somaram esforços à atuação do Centrão e à defesa da alteração do Regimento Interno da Assembleia Constituinte.Abstract: This article analyzes the political and economic positions of evangelical deputies in the Constituent Assembly (1987-1988). Based especially on speeches by the deputies Daso Coimbra and Fausto Rocha, we demonstrate the presence of a liberal-economic rhetoric in the defense of free initiative and entrepreneurship, that grew out of the reaction to an opposing pole, identified with progressive groups and parties more explicitly located on the left of the political spectrum - seen as a defender of “statist” perspectives for economic and social life of country. The speeches are notable for their strong anticommunist, anti-state perspective, and for the association between free enterprise and free religious expression and initiative. Finally, the article shows how these parliamentarians worked together to support the Centrão, defending the amendment of the bylaws of the Constituent Assembly.
