Abstract

Acanthogymnomyces terrestris gen. et sp. nov., a gymnothecial ascomycete from Japanese soil, is described and illustrated. It is characterized by brownish ascomata with numerous long straight setae, cylindrical to pyriform asci and hyaline to pale-colored, oblate ascospores with an equatorial rim and a sulcate ornamentation. The fungus is tentatively accommodated in the Eoterfeziaceae. The new combination A. princeps (Spiromastix princeps Udagawa et Uchiyama) is proposed.
