Abstract
Controlled batch growth of Clostridium acetobutylicum shows that the presence of reducing agents sodium sulfide and cysteine favor the formation of butyrate and hydrogen at near neutral pH. This phenomenon is believed to be caused by the reducing environment resulting in excess electrons being diverted to form increased butyrate and hydrogen. © 1988 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
