Abstract

Supporting creative thinking, language and academic skills which are related to cognitive skills during pre-school period with quality programs is crucially important for children’s further academic lives. Based on this view, in this study it was aimed to investigate the effect of Cognitive Skills Support Program on 61-72 month-old children’s creative thinking, academic and language skills. The study group was comprised of 58 children; 29 of them were in the control group and 29 of them were in experimental group. During the data collection process, many tools were used such as “Personal Information Form”, “The Test for Creative Thinking – Drawing Production (TCT-DP)” which was originally developed by Urban and Jellen (1996) and adapted to Turkish children by Can Yaşar and Aral (2011) in terms of validity and reliability and “Kaufman urvey of Early Academic and Language kills (K-SEALS) which was developed by Kaufman and Kaufman (1993) and adapted in terms of its validity and reliability by Uyanık and Kandır (2014). Cognitive Skills Support Program which aimed to support children’s cognitive, academic, language and creative thinking skills was implemented two days a week for a period of twelve weeks. While analyzing the data, Mann Whitney U Test for the difference between groups and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test for comparison within groups were used. At the end of the study, it was found that Cognitive Skills Support Program was effective in supporting children’s creative thinking academic and language skills.
