Abstract
The objective was to record the occurrence and describe the clinical and hematological findings of outbreaks of trypanosomiasis in cattle on properties located in Timbaúba and Paudalho in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco. Visits to the properties were carried out to collect data on of the herd as well as information on the management of animals on the farm, clinical examination and collection of blood samples, searching for parasites in the blood, and Polymerase Chain Reaction. Clinically, the animals had pale mucosae, emaciation, and there was a history of death in both properties. Prior to milking, oxytocin was applied and biting flies were also observed. The hemogram showed normocytic normochromic anemia and leukocytosis due to neutrophilia in most animals. Presence of Trypanosoma vivax was observed in the blood smear and confirmed with the PCR. Treatment with dimethiazine diaceturate (10.5 mg/kg) in a single dose was recommended. In conclusion, T. vivax occurs in the northeast region sporadically and poor sanitary management predisposes the occurrence of disease in the herds.
