Abstract

The Ottoman Empire is renowned for its establishment of a unique educationThe Ottoman Empire is renowned for its establishment of a unique educationsystem. Music was integral to this system that was based on a lifesystem. Music was integral to this system that was based on a life-long educationprinciple. The Ottoman State promoted its education through various institutionsspread throughout the country.Our study offers information regarding the contents of the courses andOur study offers information regarding the contents of the courses andeducation methods that were taught in the EnderûnHümâyûn, Musika-yı Hümâyûn, Mevlevihane and music schools that were established after the Decree of Reorganization (Tanzimat). These were the important institutionsthat once offered music education in the Ottoman State.Our research also includes information about the Meşk system, which is the oldest method of Turkish music education. Lastly evaluations were made in our studyabout the applicability of the Ottoman period music education system to the moderneducation system
