Abstract

The design of structural adjustment programmes has failed to take account of environmental and social considerations in any meaningful way. There is a need to reform the policies to include environmental concerns, institutional changes, reforms in lending policies and the identification of priorities for future work to enhance their effectiveness. Strategic environmental assessment should he applied to all countries undergoing macro-economics reforms. © 1996 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
