Abstract

This paper introduces a heuristic approach to estimate location of the moving object represented by a mobile sensor in an indoor environment. A step-by-step procedure is proposed to determine the estimated location. The first step is the assignment of predefined coordinates in two dimensional planes. The second step is the determination of the received signal strength of the three wireless access points with the use of WiFi monitor android application. The third step is the computation of the reference point RP (a, b) of the mobile sensor with the aid of trilateration method. The fourth step is the computation of the distances between the reference point RP (a, b) and pre-defined set of points P(xn, yn) and the final step is the determination of the shortest distance between the reference point RP (a, b) and the pre-defined points P(x, y) that represent the estimated location. Results showed that proposed method of location estimation has achieved acceptable location estimation. It is also noted that the efficiency in terms of number of comparisons has improved compared with brute force and divide and conquer algorithms. Future works may focus on the enhancement the proposed location estimation method to find out other similar applications.
