Abstract

This article shows some of the theoretical perspectives that help to analyze social movements from a cultural standpoint. It starts by performing a "diagnosis of the situation" in the field of studies of social movements, arguing that the strategic and cultural perspectives dominate the field, along with a current boom in the production of cultural orientation approaches. Then, starting with the arguments provided by symbolic interactionism, we review three theories culturally oriented o study mobilizations: a) collective identity; b) collective action frames; and c) situated action and public arenas. The conclusion is presented in terms of a "prognosis" for the field of studies of social movements.
