Abstract

The subfamily Helosciomyzinae Steyskal (Sciomyzidae), with the genera Helosciomyza Hendel, Polytocus Lamb, and Xenosciomyza Tonnoir and Malloch, is given family rank. The taxonomy of the group is reviewed, and a key to the nine genera and 23 species now included is given. A new genus, Cobergius, is erected to receive two new Australian species, C. canus and C. hirsutus. Sciogriphoneura Malloch is transferred from the Dryomyzidae to the Helosciomyzidae. Helosciomyza is subdivided to create four new genera: Dasysciomyza, Napaeosciomyza, Neosciomyza, and Scordalus. Helosciomyza simillima Harrison is placed in synonymy with Napaeosciomyza rara (Hutton). Male postabdomens of 21 species are illustrated. Family, genus, and species relationships are discussed briefly. © 1981 Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
