A incidência de frentes frias no município de Vitória (ES)

Abstract

Cold fronts (CFs) are atmospheric systems that dynamize climatic conditions in a particular place throughout the year. Because of the alterations they cause in climatic conditions, this study aims at verifying the incidence of cold fronts and their effects on some climatic elements in the Municipality of Vitória, in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil between December (beginning of summer) 2010 and March (end of summer) 2012. In order to be carried out, this study used daily precipitation and average temperature data from INMET (Portuguese acronym for Brazilian National Institute of Meteorology), and wind data from BDM (Meteorological Data System) of the climatic station located at Eurico de Aguiar Salles Airport, in Vitória. The identification of CF incidence on Vitória (ES) was performed using daily weather forecasts provided by CPTEC (Weather Forecast and Climatic Studies Center), by Climatempo and by Incaper (Espírito Santo Institute for Research, Technical Support and Rural Extension), as well as synoptic charts by the Brazilian Navy Weather Service and CPTEC. The results show that the winter and spring seasons had the highest incidence of CFs in the Municipality of Vitória. It was also verified that CFs contributed to rain events, decrease in the average temperature, and increase in the meridional component of the wind.
