Abstract

In the life of an increasingly developing society, language is used for various needs and interests. This happens because of differences in social status in the community and language situations. Therefore, special attention is needed to the social dimension of language. In sociolinguistics, the diversity of language use is referred to as language variation. one of the factors that causes the emergence of language variations is the selection of one of the various languages that is influenced by the needs of the speaker or the author of the communication tool that fits the situation. Related to the description, ken (chant) is one of the variations of language that has its own peculiarities. This particularity can be seen in utterances expressed in certain situations and only used by low socio-economic groups. ken (chant) is a manifesta tion of the variety of languages used by certain social groups with contrived songs so as to give the impression of “pleasing” or to be “pitied”. This study will examine the use of ken language by beggars in the Serang Red Light neighborhood. Beggars have unique speeches and styles when begging. The results of this study; the speech of beggars in the Red Light neighborhood of Serang City, Banten Province, found vocabulary that can be categorized as a characteristic variation of ken, which is as many as 15 pieces.
