Abstract
This paper analyses the copper mining ex-novo settlements in Chile, built during the XX century by international enterprises. As a complement to the rural territory and the traditional cities, they attend productive functions, residence necessities and other facilities, with the purpose to obtain efficient production. The paper presents four cases that belongs to the Corporación del Cobre (CODELCO), the State enterprise organized in 1971, and other two cases related to the private enterprises. They show the evolution of the settlements, from the mining town to the mining hotel, based on productive criteria that include territorial, urban and architectural operations.
