Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of NW training on the balance of cases with chronic orthopaedic knee problems. Methods: The design of the study is a randomised controlled trial. A total of 40 volunteers with chronic orthopaedic knee problems were randomly divided into 2 groups with odd-even rule (ratio 1:1). The control group was evaluated after 6 weeks interval and the study group was examined after a 6-week period of NW balance training. Balance was evaluated using the Kinesthetic Ability Trainer® (KAT) and Single Leg Stance Test (SLST). Results: Seven cases were excluded because of irregular participation in the training program and assessments or because of an additional health problem. A total of 33 volunteers analysed. No adverse effect observed in interventions. In the study group (n=15), statistically significant differences were observed in the KAT parameters (p < 0.05, dppc2: 0.13-1.09), and SLST results (p < 0.01, dppc2: 0.78-0.99) after training. No statistically significant change was observed in these parameters in the control group (n=18). Conclusion: The results indicated that training using NW was effective for the balance of cases with chronic orthopaedic knee problems. NW can be used safely for improvement of balance in these individuals.
