Abstract

Resistance and cross-resistance to atrazine and other triazine herbicides are considered before examining the two main mechanisms of resistance: alteration of the target site of herbicide action; and the detoxification of metabolism of the herbicide in the plant. The resolution of resistance problems using different cultivation practices and patterns of herbicide use, and the possibility of modifying crop plants, are explored. An example of herbicide resistance in the tropics, propanil-resistant Echinochloa crus-galli in Colombia, is introduced, and diagrams for an integrated strategy for annual ryegrass control are presented. -J.W.Cooper
