The emphasis of this survey is on the new concept of public-key cryptosystems, the recently proposed schemes for their implementation, and the problems pertaining to cryptocomplexity Also presented are a brief outline of classical cryptoiogy, the principles underlying present-day cryptology, and a short description of the now official Data Encryption Standard. © 1979, ACM.
