Abstract

Despite their diversity, the Islamists movements have generally evolved in a constant fashion towards political pragmatism, which suggests that it is far from being an eternal hostage of its apparent dogmatism or of the religious rigor of some of its variants. This current transformation goes hand-in-hand with movements of counter-reform. This paper aims to illustrate this trend through the trajectory of Mauritanian Islamists groups in general and the institutionalization of the main local Islamist political party in particular.
