How Microbiology was run

Abstract

This is part of a series of three papers on the history of Microbiology, marking 75 years since its launch. The first [1] dealt with how the Society, and the journal, came into being. This paper looks at what was involved in running the journal, the challenges it faced at different times, and how a generalist journal picked its way through the many subdisciplines that together constitute the science of microbiology. The final paper will consider how the journal has waxed and waned in scale over the years, its geographical reach, how it has been physically produced, and how it responded to the opportunities and threats associated with electronic publication and the age of the internet.
