Abstract
Panji stories which recounts the adventure of a crown prince of Jenggala in search of his lover, Galuh or Sekartaji, has inspired many art forms in Indonesia, from dances, songs to puppetry. One of them is wayang gědhog, which emerged around 15 th century and has been flourished in Javanese courts, mainly in Surakarta, until now, though it is not as popular as its counterpart, wayang purwa, which took Mahabharata and Ramayana as repertoires. Along with time, wayang gědhog in Kasunanan and Mangkunagaran developed with their own special characteristics, which are hardly recognized nowadays. Those characteristics are not only having their past values due to the time of Jenggala and Kediri as Panji stories' background, but also related with some actual factors which are relevant with the temporal context of performance. This article is focusing on developmental history, narrative structure, meanings and relations of Panji stories with the wayang gědhog performances in Surakarta style.
