Abstract
File organizations which support interactive retrieval for large data bases is a major concern of information system designers. This session explores recent advances in the design of such organizations. Two papers address themselves specifically to the file organizations of existing interactive retrieval systems and present relevant operational statistics of the systems. A third paper reviews recent developments in the design and evaluation of file organizations. Comparisons of the costs of querying and updating conventional organizations, clustered organizations and a new class of hybrid llst organizations are presented.
