Abstract

Abidjan is seen as the center of the AIDS epidemic in West Africa, mainly because it is a regional business hub and major port which attracts many visitors who patronize the city's busy red light districts. The infection rate among prostitutes is estimated at 50%, but educational programs aimed at changing behavior have remained ineffective, raising fears for the increasing spread of the disease. -Author
