Abstract

Adolescents living in orphanages face more complex emotional challenges compared to their peers in family settings, such as limited social support and past traumatic experiences. These conditions increase the risk of stress and the use of maladaptive coping strategies. Although the relationship between emotion regulation and coping stress has been extensively studied in populations such as university students or working adults, research focusing specifically on adolescents in orphanages remains scarce. The orphanage context has unique characteristics—such as collective caregiving patterns and limited individualized emotional support—that may influence this relationship. This study examined the relationship between emotion regulation and coping stress strategies among adolescents at Orphanage X. A correlational quantitative design was employed with total sampling of 120 adolescents. Instruments consisted of the Emotion Regulation Scale (22 valid items; ? = 0.933) and the Coping Stress Scale (36 valid items; ? = 0.945). Data analysis used Pearson’s Product Moment correlation after assumption testing was met. Results showed that most adolescents were in the moderate category for both variables, and there was a very strong positive relationship between emotion regulation and coping stress (r = 0.946; p < 0.001; r² ? 0.895). The higher the emotion regulation ability, the more adaptive the coping strategies used. These findings have practical implications for implementing structured psychological interventions—such as emotion regulation skills training, strengthening problem-focused coping, and caregiver-based social support—to help orphanage adolescents manage stress healthily, prevent maladaptive coping, and promote long-term psychological well-being. ABSTRAK Remaja yang tinggal di panti asuhan menghadapi tantangan emosional yang lebih kompleks dibandingkan remaja pada umumnya, seperti keterbatasan dukungan sosial dan pengalaman masa lalu yang traumatis. Kondisi ini meningkatkan risiko stres dan penggunaan strategi coping yang kurang adaptif. Meskipun hubungan antara regulasi emosi dan coping stress telah banyak diteliti pada populasi mahasiswa atau pekerja dewasa, kajian spesifik pada remaja panti asuhan masih jarang dilakukan. Padahal, lingkungan panti memiliki karakteristik unik—seperti pola asuh kolektif dan minimnya dukungan emosional personal—yang dapat memengaruhi hubungan kedua variabel tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan menguji hubungan antara regulasi emosi dan strategi coping stress pada remaja di Panti Asuhan X. Desain penelitian adalah kuantitatif korelasional dengan total sampling terhadap 120 remaja. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah skala regulasi emosi (22 aitem valid; ? = 0,933) dan skala coping stress (36 aitem valid; ? = 0,945). Analisis Pearson Product Moment dilakukan setelah uji asumsi terpenuhi. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar remaja berada pada kategori sedang untuk kedua variabel, dan terdapat hubungan positif sangat kuat antara regulasi emosi dan coping stress (r = 0,946; p < 0,001; r² ? 0,895). Semakin tinggi kemampuan regulasi emosi, semakin adaptif strategi coping yang digunakan. Implikasi praktis temuan ini adalah perlunya penerapan program intervensi psikologis yang terstruktur—seperti pelatihan regulasi emosi, penguatan problem-focused coping, dan dukungan sosial berbasis pengasuh—untuk membantu remaja panti mengelola tekanan secara sehat, mencegah penggunaan coping maladaptif, dan meningkatkan kesejahteraan psikologis jangka panjang.
