Abstract

Nitric oxide is a gaseous mediator responsible for a variety of physiologic effects. The l-arginine is the precursor of the synthesis of nitric oxide in presence of nitric oxide synthase. This article reviews the functions of nitric oxide synthases, the action of nitric oxide on vascular permeability and ischemia-reperfusion injury, as well as possible methods for determination of NO.
