Integration of digital technologies in health education in rural communities

Abstract

This article presents the results of a qualitative case study incorporating ethnographic elements, conducted in a rural farming community in the southwestern region of Antioquia, Colombia, with the participation of local leaders, community health promoters, youth, and older adults. The objective was to understand the sociocultural factors that influence health education processes mediated by digital technologies. Observations, interviews, and focus groups were conducted during community walks, dialogical processes, and learning activities, which helped identify meanings and practices related to health education. Although tensions such as digital illiteracy and limited access to the internet and devices persist, the use of technology contributes to narrowing educational gaps. The findings highlight the importance of trust in academic and health institutions, participation, co-construction, and the critical curation of educational resources as key conditions for pedagogical actions that strengthen community empowerment.
